View from Cambridge Street, Manchester
I'd tentatively suggest that over the last 10-20 years Manchester has been relatively successful in regenerating itself and enticing people to live in its centre. (Perhaps it would be better to say that there have been fewer calamities than comparable cities such as Leeds!) Of the many undeveloped patches of grass and wasteland which existed when I was at university here in the mid/late-1980s, almost all have been built on, but there is a small one here and more extensive signs of certain gravy trains having run out of steam further west of Cambridge Street.
Even so, blocks of flats are encroaching here. Under the steel beams is a short canal. The railway is making its way towards Oxford Road and Piccadilly stations. Almost central is the copper-topped tower of the old Refuge Assurance building.

Ripe for development
Cleared site beside the River Medlock and very close to Oxford Road station, awaiting development. Something like the blocks in the background, perhaps?

Oxford Road station: departure from platform 2
Back in the 1970s platform 2 was generally used for electric services to Altrincham (now replaced by trams). Now it is used for services to Preston and beyond. Here a Transpennine Express service from Wilmslow* to Blackpool and Barrow in Furness leaves the station.
* Normally Manchester Airport. See
