Back in the 1970s platform 2 was generally used for electric services to Altrincham (now replaced by trams). Now it is used for services to Preston and beyond. Here a Transpennine Express service from Wilmslow* to Blackpool and Barrow in Furness leaves the station. * Normally Manchester Airport. See Image for an explanation.
