The Chatham Building - Manchester School of Art
The new extension to the Chatham Building, which houses the Faculty of Art and Design and the School of Architecture at the Manchester Metropolitan University, was designed by Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios http://www.fcbstudios.com/projects.asp?s=6&ss=2&proj=1497# and was completed in April 2013. The work involved demolishing part of the original 1960s Chatham Building whilst retaining the tower. Compare this 21st century building with the original School of Art, the Grosvenor Building, which was built in 1880 and is just around the corner (Image]).

The Salutation
The Salutation, known as "Sal" to regulars, is shown on old maps to have stood at the corner Boundary Street and Higher Chatham Street from at least as early as 1844. It is thought to be one of only two pubs in Manchester to have retained its 1840s decor. The Sal was saved from closure when it was bought by Manchester Metropolitan University in 2011. At the time, a spokesman for MMU said "The Salutation Pub is a local landmark which has been a popular haunt of Manchester Met staff and students over many years. Buying a pub is a bit out of the ordinary but represents a strategic acquisition for the university – surrounded by land which we either own or occupy" (http://www.manchestersfinest.com/articles/save-the-sal/ Manchester's Finest). Originally it was Hardy's house, later a Tetley's house and was owned by Punch Taverns prior to the University takeover. Pub website: https://thesalutationpub.com/about/

The Salutation, Higher Chatham Street Manchester
On the corner of Boundary Street. Victorian or Edwardian, glazed tiles below, brick above. When I studied maths at the University of Manchester in 1985-88, this was the mathematicians' pub or so we were told. We had to calculate our own bills and sit on chairs based on conic sections (or that could have been poor workmanship). It was then slightly isolated among empty patches of grass, all of which have since been built on by the university.
