Approaching Manchester on the Bridgewater Canal
The closer a boat gets towards Manchester City Centre, the more the buildings, old and new smart and derelict, close in and the canal passes under a bewildering array of road and railway bridges.

Re-painted railway bridge
Newly-maintained, re-painted and looking much smarter without the growth of bushes and weeds. Well done, Network Rail! For a view of its earlier, dilapidated condition, see Image This image arose from a conversation regarding whether the sun ever shone on the bridge to display the new paintwork. Clearly, it does, even in Winter.

Railway arches
All of the three lines (originally) which run parallel to the River Irwell are on substantial viaducts at this point. The most easterly now carries the railway to Warrington (Central) and is constructed of red brick, while the more westerly (now carrying the Metrolink) are built with blue brick. It is fine to see such grand engineering still in use so long after its conception.
