Whitworth Hall, Oxford Road, Manchester
A sturdy block of Gothic, with a large Perpendicular Gothic window flanked by towers with pinnacles, belfries and spires. Started by Alfred Waterhouse in 1898 and completed by his son, Paul, in 1902. Alfred Waterhouse was also responsible for the mighty tower (Image]) and the far sections, now housing the Manchester Museum. This is the dominant group in the University of Manchester's campus. Grade II* listed. The hall, named after a prosperous local industrialist, Joseph Whitworth, is now used for major functions including graduation ceremonies. A bequest of a wealthy merchant, John Owens, led to the foundation of Owens College in 1851. These buildings were the fruits of later expansion, the college subsequently metamorphosising into the University of Manchester. Before it merged with UMIST, it was colloquially referred to as 'Owens' to distinguish it from the latter.

The Old Quadrangle, Manchester University
The building in the centre of the view was built in 1890 as the new 'Study of Education'. The Christie's Library was a gift from the former law professor, historian and bibliophile Richard Copley Christie. For much of the twentieth century it housed the University’s principal science library. One hundred years later, and after the building of main University Library, the Christie Science Library was converted into a Bistro. To its left is the Students' Services Centre, and the more modern building to the right is the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons - the new library that superseded Christie's. It is surprisingly small for the main library of such a big university.

University of Manchester John Owens Quad, Bee in the City
A view of the John Owens quadrangle at the University of Manchester. The University is one of a number of locations taking part in the free public art event ‘Bee in the City’ with individually designed, super-sized bee sculptures. The university’s ‘Bee inspired’ sculpture, designed by American artist Kate Eggleston-Wirtz, can be seen to the left of the central tree. See Image] for a closer view and more details about the bee.

Bee Inspired at the University of Manchester
One of the large "Bee in the City" bee sculptures in place in the University of Manchester's John Owens quadrangle. It was designed by American artist Kate Eggleston-Wirtz. The information board attached to the sculpture reads: "The bee in this design represents the University of Manchester. Its primary colour scheme is purple, gold and grey; the University colours. The world in its eyes focuses on global links, international investment in people, pulling together and working towards a sustainable future. The cog, depicted in yellow around the eyes, symbolises that this is a worker bee."

University of Manchester tower, Oxford Road, Manchester
Formidable, and characteristic of its designer, Alfred Waterhouse, 1883-87. It has all manner of openings - the windows get thinner and pointier as one ascends - all crowned by a steep pyramidal roof and pinnacled spires. The archway leads to the quadrangle and main building behind. Grade II* listed. To the left is the Whitworth Hall (Image]), while the Manchester Museum lies to the right.
