Formidable, and characteristic of its designer, Alfred Waterhouse, 1883-87. It has all manner of openings - the windows get thinner and pointier as one ascends - all crowned by a steep pyramidal roof and pinnacled spires. The archway leads to the quadrangle and main building behind. Grade II* listed. To the left is the Whitworth Hall (Image]), while the Manchester Museum lies to the right.
