Green lane between houses in Totternhoe
The homes that were built here obviously had to respect this old bridleway or footpath. I wonder where it leads?

The war memorial in St Giles' churchyard in Totternhoe
A really nicely sited war memorial of a really interesting design, erected soon after World War I, or the Great War, as it was often referred to at that time. The linear village of Totternhoe lost several sons and their names are listed. I always read the names, the Freds, Alberts, Harrys, Ernests and so on who as young lads left this little community on a wave of patriotism and optimism but lost their lives far from home, and may most likely remain there, never to return home to the soil that grew them.

Part of the war memorial in St Giles churchyard in Totternhoe
The dead of the Great War are listed here. The dates of the war read 1914 to 1919 which I believe is correct as although the famous armistice was agreed and signed on the 11th day of the eleventh month of 1918 fighting, conflict, wounds, occupation and conflicts in parts of the world other than Europe meant that soldiers, sailors and airmen lost their lives well into 1919, and some service personnel did not return to these shores until even later than 1919. It states that they gave their lives for England. Now we might say Great Britain possibly or the United Kingdom. As England today refers to England rather than Scotland and Wales, which of course contributed greatly to that conflict. The Scottish regiments particularly always seem to have contributed massively to any war effort. Some say that we would never have had the Empire or such military clout without them. I don't doubt it. Though none of the names here served in Scottish regiments, or Welsh it seems, though some have no regiment listed. Their names shall be remembered.
