New Stock at Luton
A Class 317/1 electric unit stands in Luton station with a trio of preserved ex-London Country buses parked up in the adjacent yard. At the time that this photo was taken the Class 317's had only just replaced the diesel units on the colloquially known Bedpan route between St Pancras and Bedford bringing improved comfort for the long suffering passengers. Their tenure was brief however (1983-87) as they were replaced by the present class 319 dual-voltage units for the opening of Thameslink. They subsequently moved to the West Coast mainline and then on to the East Coast and East Anglia where they continue to provide sterling, if unremarkable, service.
