Osmondthorpe Lane Playing Field
Part of this site, to the right of the photo, was once the site of Osmondthorpe
Colliery, labelled on the 1908 map as a 'railway colliery' presumably as it was close to Neville Hill engine shed, though it also served the nearby York Road ironworks by means of a short tramway.

Neville Hill Train Care Centre
The main building to the right is the original engine shed of 1904, initially operated by the North Eastern Railway. In the 1970s it was home to a large number of British Rail's diesel multiple units serving the north of England. Since October 2021 the centre has been managed by Northern Railway (a state-owned entity) which employs 550 people at the site according to railadvent.co.uk, maintaining not only their own trains but those of operators LNER and Cross Country.
When last photographed for this site in 2008 Image it was known by the shorter, older term 'depot'. The implication is that trains are now 'cared for' rather than just 'deposited' here, although the difference is one of terminology, not practice. Plus they are much cleaner places inside.
