Newton House, Spencer Place, Chapeltown
Built in 1820 by the Earl Cowper who was one of the aristocracy that owned substantial land in the area at that time but who did not in actual fact live there,in 1947 the house was being used has a Bed & Breakfast Boarding house as well as a Transport Cafe.

The address is 54 Spencer Place but access is from Cowper Street. The house dates from 1835 and is grade II listed (list entry 1256034), where it is stated that it was part of a speculative venture, the failure of which contributed to Sir Walter Scott's insolvency.
