Church of St James the Great, Woodhall
This Anglican church with brick walls and a copper roof was built in 1959, by Bradford architects Barker and Jordan. The new church was one of four churches built during Bishop Donald Coggan’s initiative to provide churches for new housing estates and its design is thought to have been influenced by Sir Basil Spence’s Coventry Cathedral of about the same time. It replaced a less substantial structure a few hundred yards replacing a traditional stone built church of the same name of 1915 on Waterloo Road. The parish name was changed in 2018 to "Woodhall and Waterloo" to reflect the fact that the building is in the Waterloo district of Pudsey rather than the Woodhall district of Bradford that it also serves. Technical note: rendered in grayscale as the photo was taken late in the day against the sun, leading to a colour cast in the original.
