Quarry House in evening sunshine
Not the most loved building in Leeds, but spring evening sunshine works wonders for the dullest of subjects. In front of it, work has started on a new development which will obscure this view from Eastgate.

Approaching Quarry House in Leeds
Quarry House contains offices for The Department of Health and The Department of Work and Pensions. Its imposing design has often been regarded domineering and self-important and has led to the building being locally nicknamed "The Kremlin" and "The Ministry of Truth".

Quarry House
I always thought that this building looked as if it had strayed from the Kremlin, and was not far out as it is a government building that was opened in 1993 to house the DSS, and now houses the Department of Health.

Quarry House, Leeds
Opened in 1993 to house the DSS when it relocated from London, Quarry House is built on the site of the old Quarry Hill Flats which were constructed in the 1930's. It was the largest housing scheme in the country at the time, apparently modelled on the Karl Marx Hof flats in Vienna. The whole complex was demolished in 1978, the steel frame and concrete clad construction having proved unsuccessful. Pictures of the old flats may be viewed at http://www.bbc.co.uk/leeds/content/image_galleries/image_gallery_quarry_hill_gallery.shtml Besides Quarry House, the site also now houses the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds College of Music and BBC Leeds. Quarry House straddles 2 squares - this side is in SE3133, the other in SE3033.
