Giant Dragline
Giant dragline at St Aidan's. The site used to be a deep opencast that was flooded when the nearby River Aire was breached filling the pit with millions of gallons of water up to 200ft deep. It has now been filled in and reclaimed and now acts as a nature reserve.

Bucyrus Erie
This walking drag line excavator was built in 1948 by the Bucyrus Erie Co, South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It worked in the U.S.A for 4yrs before it was dismantled and shipped to England. It’s been dismantled 4 times in its history and worked in Pontypridd, South Wales and Cannock, Staffordshire. It finally moved to the St Aidans opencast mine near Leeds in 1972 where it worked until 1983. It is one of only four remaining drag line excavators still in existence. It weighs 1200 tons and has a bucket capacity of 20 cubic yards. The walking dragline bucket, at RSPB St Aidan's
With a car for scale. The St Aidan's Sunshine Miners' Bucyrus Erie 1150B walking dragline is an opencast coal excavator which can move from place to place. Preserved with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and open to the public three times a year [usually on Saturdays around Easter, near Father's Day and on the Heritage Open Day Weekend].
