There has been a pub on this site since 1715 but the present building dates largely from 1895 and takes its name from the family who owned it from 1880 until at least the 1930s. It is regarded as a 'heritage pub' mainly for its interior, particularly the rare marble topped bar, and was the first building in Leeds to have electric lighting. John Betjeman even called it 'the very heart of Leeds', a slogan printed on the pub's pint glasses to this day. Not long after submitting this photo, in June 2022 the listing was upgraded to II* (List entry 1255825) in recognition of the pub's significance. Reasons for the grade II* designation include "a very good example of a yard inn constructed on a narrow medieval burgage plot ... a rare surviving late-C19 luncheon bar and one of the best examples of its type ... 1895 interior decorative scheme and a wealth of high-quality features".

Dating from 1909-10, by Sydney Kitson for Thornton & Co, India Rubber Manufacturers - the lettering can still be seen in the frieze. Steel and reinforced-concrete frame clad in 'Marmo' Burmantofts faience. Grade II listed. The listing notes that "'Marmo' was an imitation marble made by the Leeds Fireclay Company after 1889. Other buildings in the city [using it] include Atlas Chambers, King Street and The Scottish Union and National Insurance Co., Park Row."

Built in 1760 the building is now a lively pub in the centre of town called Whitelocks but it was also a row of workers' cottages in its time.
