Crossgates tram terminus
Showing 'Feltham' car No 521. In March 1957, Leeds operated a total of ten tram routes as follow: 2, City - Roundhay via Moortown 3, City - Roundhay via Harehills 9, City - Dewsbury Road 12, City - Middleton via Parkside 17, City - Harehills Lane 18, City - Crossgates 20, City - Halton 22, City (Kirkgate) - Temple Newsam 25, City (Swinegate) - Hunslet 26, City - Middleton via Belle Isle. Of these, 22 and 25 worked independently and were not linked with other routes, while 17 was a short working along York Road. The other routes were linked in various ways as follows: (a) The 2, 3 and 9 were linked, so that cars worked Briggate-3-2-9-9-2-3-Briggate (b) The 12, 18, 20 and 26 were linked so that cars worked Crossgates-18-12-26-20-26-12-18-Crossgates. These linkages gave convenient cross-city workings for most routes.

Crossgates, Leeds
After World War II, Leeds found itself short of trams to handle the very busy post-war traffic. Old balcony cars were not considered fit to be used and were scrapped, so to replace them Leeds sought second-hand cars from cities that were abandoning their tramways, including Hull, Manchester and Southampton, but the most significant purchase was of some 90 'Feltham' cars from London. The first of these arrived in 1949, and these cars gave sterling service over the next ten years until the final abandonment in Leeds in November 1959. Here, car 521 is just leaving the Crossgates terminus for its cross-city journey to Middleton.
