The pub takes its name from a branch of the Savile family, Earls of Mexborough from 1766, most of whose land is around Methley and Wakefield but with some properties in the Thorner area. https://www.mexboroughestates.co.uk/history.html One swallow may not make a summer, but one summer bird made its way into this photo.
