The presence of this wide verge is explained by the fact that Heaton Avenue (left) is part of the original alignment of Dixon Lane, which was straightened at some time in the 20th century.

Perimeter wall of Balks House
The wall has an interesting mix of different types of brick on top of an earlier and now very eroded stone wall. For the house itself see Image Alongside it is the continuation of Walker's Lane where, appropriately, it is only wide enough for pedestrians.
