An Experiment from Sunderland
At one period, Leeds planned to retain its tramways and convert the central area to subway running, (as has been done in many German cities). Realising that single-deck cars would be needed for the subways, Leeds bought this car second-hand from Sunderland and rebuilt it to give some idea of how the subway idea might work in practice. But changed thinking took over and the subway plan was dropped in favour of converting the tram routes to bus operation, and car No 600, seen here at Thwaite Gate, was relegated to shuttling along the short route to Hunslet.

No 602 at Thwaite Gate
This was one of two brand-new cars which Leeds ordered to evaluate its tram subway proposals. No 602 incorporated many modern features and was smooth and fast on its rubber-insert wheels. But when the subway plans were dropped it became an embarrassment, and was relegated, like 600, to the short Hunslet route. This car is preserved at the National Tramway Museum, Crich.
