Metheringham railway station, Lincolnshire
Opened as "Blankney and Metheringham" in 1882 by the Great Northern Railway and Great Eastern Railway on their joint line from Lincoln to Sleaford, this station closed in 1961 and was demolished. It was rebuilt and reopened as "Metheringham" in 1975, with minimal facilities. View south east from the level crossing. The former signal box, just visible to the right of the line by the level crossing, still had a "Blankney" sign on it, when this image was taken.

Metheringham railway station, Lincolnshire, 2012
Opened as "Blankney and Metheringham" in 1882 by the Great Northern Railway and Great Eastern Railway on their joint line from Lincoln to Sleaford, this station closed in 1961 and was demolished. It was rebuilt and reopened as "Metheringham" in 1975, with minimal facilities. View north west from the level crossing. The signal box on the left was however always called "Blankney". At the time this image was taken, it controlled manual signalling and traditional wooden level crossing gates. When Image was taken 10 years later, the box was closed, signals were colour light and lifting barriers had replaced the old gates.

Blankney signal box, Station Road, Metheringham
Taken not long after the crossing was converted to automatic barriers this shows the now closed Grade II Listed signal box. It was built by the London & North Eastern Railway in 1928 to a Great Northern Railway type 4 design. The box is substantially as built and retains its original Tyer Direct Tappet frame. When listed it was one of only five of its type to survive. late 20th or early 21st century alterations include adding the toilet block projection next to the entrance; replacing the timber horizontal sashes to the operations room with uPVC; and replacing the weatherboarding below the gables, removing the small rectangular four-light windows. Presumably the old gate operating equipment has been retained inside due to the listing. Signalling was transferred to Lincoln Signalling Control Centre mid April 2014 after a 10 day closure of the line and closure of five signal boxes. The station opened in July 1882 named Blankney and Metheringham hence the name of the box despite being at Metheringham station. The station closed in September 1961 and reopened in October 1975 as Metheringham.
