Louth, no.1 cattle market, aerial 2007
See also: Image Louth is officially the country's favourite market town this year (2012), and also has the only remaining cattle market in the area: it is the hub of the local farming community. Yet planning permission was recently granted to a developer for a second cattle market. It has been denied that it is to be a replacement, and that the original cattle market (photo) will be closed. Meanwhile the town council is having to complain to East Lindsey District Council (which owns the existing cattle market) because it has fallen into a disgraceful state of disrepair. The final piece in the jigsaw is that a couple of supermarkets would like to move into this site. The latest is that East Lindsey District Council commissioned a study (costing £25,000, and in which Louth was sometimes spelt "Lough"), and the result is that this cattle market would be an excellent site for a large food store!

Derelict jam factory, Cinder Lane, Louth: 2012
The old jam factory is still there despite the expectation in 2008 that it was soon to be replaced with housing (7 flats, and possibly a house too). See Image and Image As you can see, it is now home to quite an extensive collection of plants. One of the problems has been the chimney. Louth centre is a Conservation Area, and the chimney a respected feature of the Louth skyline. The developer was supposed to conserve it. However, after a further 4 years of being left untouched, the neighbours are now understandably fearful that debris will fall on their houses. So reluctantly East Lindsey District Council has had to give in to the developer's wish to demolish it.

Derelict jam factory, Cinder Lane, Louth: detail, 2012
As can be seen, the beautiful brickwork on the chimney is in good condition. To demolish it is a crying shame. The old jam factory, of which it is part, is still there despite the expectation in 2008 that it was soon to be replaced with housing (7 flats, and possibly a house too). See Image and Image As you can see, it is now home to quite an extensive collection of plants. One of the problems has been the chimney.
