The former main building of the Glandinorwig Slate Works (Melin Sam)
The Glandinorwig Slate Works mainly produced polished writing slates for use in schools. Known, locally as Melin Sam, after its owner Samuel Jones, the concern was established in 1853. The mill had three departments: slate sawing and splitting, slate polishing and slate framing and finishing. Sam advertised himself as being 'the sole maker of the celebrated "Crown" school slates. Although the company ceased to exist by 1900, Sam's "Crown" slates were still in use at Deiniolen Central School in the late 1940s.
