The bell tower of Holy Cross Church, Llannor
One is familiar with seeing a bell tower surmounted by a cross, but not, as here in Llannor, by a chimney pot. One bell ringer familiar with this bell tower was William Roberts, who like his vicar, Chancellor John Owen, was a fierce opponent of Methodism. In the late 1740s he wrote an interlude "Ffrewyll y Methodistiaid" (The Scourge of Methodism) which mercilessly pilloried the vices and follies of Howell Harris and his cronies. For this he was paid the princely sum of £50 by a group of local gentlemen who used to socialize at Bodvel Hall. Harris, a South Walian, who had taken Madame Sidney Griffith, the wife of Wm Griffith, the boorish and drunken squire of Cefnalmwch Image, as his travelling companion and mistress on his missionary tours of Wales, was not exactly the flavour of the month amongst the Lleyn gentry.
