The east corner of this remarkable house, showing its construction in limestone and pink sandstone. The crow-step gables are a particular feature. For more details see Image

Caer Rhun Hall west corner
At the west end of the front of this remarkable house there is a small informal parterre with box hedging in the form of a maze with shrub plantings. From this direction the tall chimneys are very imposing. For more detail see Image

Caer Rhun Hall
Hidden from the road by a high wall and other buildings, this is one of the Conwy Valley's best kept secrets. Caer Rhun hall is a grade II listed building, and now operates as a college, conference centre and wedding venue. It was built by General Hugh Gough in 1892 on the site of Plas Caer Rhun, a seventeenth-century house which may have had medieval origins. There are extensive grounds and many fine, specimen trees. It is not open to the public and I am grateful for permission to visit and photograph the area.

Caer Rhun Hall courtyard
Functional parts of the hall complex were built in a dark igneous rock, matching the farm across the road (Image). It is a very unusual stone that does not look local, but neither do I know its source.

Caerhun Farm Caravan Club Certified Site - 1
This very pleasant caravan site is approximately one kilometre south of Ty’n-y-groes on the B5106. The site is signposted by the Image in this photograph, which is by the entrance. Also near to the entrance are two bus stops, one on each side of the road with reasonable frequent services north to Conwy and south eo Betws-y-coed. The building on the right is private. The building, just right of centre, is part of Image Less than a kilometre away is this walk in the Conwy Valley, Image For the next photograph, click here: Image For the last photograph, click here: Image

Door To The Secret Garden
This photograph of a door in the wall surrounding the Caerhun Farm Caravan Club Certified Site reminded me of the door to the secret garden in the similarly named children’s classic story by Frances Hodgson Burnett http://www.penguin.co.uk/nf/Author/AuthorPage/0,,1000005453,00.html . In fact, from the other side of the wall, the door is completely hidden by the shrubbery and the building whose roof can be seen is on the other side of the B5106. Not much of a garden there, then!
