Tyn-y-Coed recycling day
A kerbside recycling lorry squeezes its way up the narrow lane leading to Cilgwyn Mawr through the small cluster of houses. Once again the footpath has been diverted, and now runs through the field and over a stile and down steep steps to the road instead of following the track to Ty Newydd as indicated on the map.

Winter Oak
A very fine Oak tree standing at the side of the footpath by Nant Meifod. The footpath runs to the left of the tree and the going is "soft", though a couple of large logs can be used as steps.

Stile and footpath
There's one great thing about following an unknown footpath, and that's the element of adventure. The way-mark at this stile points encouragingly at a very boggy patch of rushes, which we have to traverse to reach Meifod.

Nant Meifod
A smooth, well-maintained pasture drops suddenly into the deeply-incised Nant Meifod amid mature oak and ash trees. There is no trace on the ground of the footpath, but the gates and footbridge are well marked and maintained (Image).

Pont droed gadarn / A robust footbridge
Despite light usage, the footbridges along this path are surprisingly elaborate.

Sunken lane
A footpath follows this sunken lane which climbs the western dingle away from Nant Meifod and the farm buildings at Meifod. The view of the bare trees makes Winter a good time to follow these paths.

Footpath by Nant Meifod
This footpath was well marked but little used, running alongside the noisy little Nant Meifod. The fields were very soggy and the path heavy-going in places. On the other hand, Winter sun was very welcome and the tree looked particularly fine with their bare branches.
