Denbigh Fire Hydrant (3)
With the introduction of fire hydrants, "FP" wall plaques (denoting 'Fire Plug') became an outdated term. However, they continued in use for many years until they were replaced with more appropriate plaques on which a large letter 'H' was marked. This "FP" plaque indicates that it is 14 feet from the hydrant. Image

Denbigh Fire Hydrant (2)
Detail. A late-Victorian fire hydrant on the north side of Henllan Street. It's associated with the adjacent "FP" sign (denoting 'Fire Point' or 'Fire Plug') on the gable of the adjacent building. The fire hydrant was introduced in the late 1800s as a means of making a permanent rather than a temporary connection to the water mains, with the flow of water controlled by a valve that could be turned on or off with a key. The fire hydrant was the successor to the previous system of fire crews tapping into a water main with a tapered stand pipe, that was hammered into a previously drilled hole. When the stand pipe was removed, a wooden plug would be hammered into the hole. Image

Bronyffynnon Surgery, Denbigh
The surgery is on Bridge Street, the road which links the High Street with Lenten Pool. This is an extremely old house which has been renovated and the colour of the exterior is as it would have been originally.

Lenten Pool, Denbigh
A pool did exist on the site and it was once stocked with fish to be eaten by the garrison in the castle during Lent - hence the name. The pool was fed by a stream which ran down Henllan Street. However, the area was frequently flooded, so the pool was filled in in the late 1800's. An old preaching cross is on the roundabout in the middle of the crossroads.
