Broughton Astley Station and Down local train
View southward, towards Rugby; ex-Midland Rugby - Leicester line. In the days when thousands of tons of coal had to be conveyed daily from the Midlands coalfields to London and the South-East, a number of coal trains from Toton and other yards ran to the yards at Willesden (Sudbury Junction) in addition to all those up the Midland Main Line via Wellingbrough to Brent Sidings (Cricklewood). However, by the 1960s this line was superfluous and was closed (with the station) on 1/1/62. The train is a Rugby to Leicester local, headed by LMS Fowler 4P 2-6-4T No. 42352.

Broughton Astley
Broughton Astley has seen a large amount of new development in recent years. This is the south eastern edge of the village where housing has almost encroached as far as this footpath, which leads across the bridge over a disused railway, just visible in the trees.

View NE, towards Leicester; ex-Midland Leicester - Rugby line. The line had formerly been a useful route for coal traffic to London (Willesden), but was closed, with this station, completely on 1/1/62.

Melton Waste Company, Broughton Brickworks
Derelict brickworks in use as a scrapyard. When we were there the ground showed surveyor's marks for redevelopment and it is now an housing estate. The flooded claypit is now a large "water feature". The stationary steam engine was removed for preservation elsewhere.

Seen in earlier monochrome illustration. Built 1891 by Ruston Proctor of Lincoln and fitted with Meyer expansion slide valves, Porter type throttle governor and four bar crosshead guides. Was long disused but surprisingly complete. Has now been removed for private preservation and the works demolished.
