Ivanhoe Terrace
Looking north-east along South Street. Ivanhoe Terrace on the left was built between 1822 and 1826 by Robert Chaplin to provide boarding accommodation for visitors to the newly-opened spa. This Grade II listed terrace originally had an unobstructed view to the park and spa before later buildings went up on the south side of the street. The terrace was part of the baths complex, which included the Ivanhoe Baths, the Royal Hotel and Rawdon House/Terrace, all designed by Chaplin. He also designed the 1849 railway station (possibly in collaboration with the Midland Railways engineer J. S. Crossley).

Priest House, Prior Park Road, Ashby-de-la-Zouch
A quirky looking building with its Gothick windows and ground floor arcade. There is no obvious reason why it was built like this. Early/mid 19th century, Listed Grade II.

Gallery and picture framing business on South Street. On the right is the extension to Ivanhoe Terrace (see Image), designed by Robert Chaplin and built in 1830 during the early successful years of the spa resort.

Ivanhoe Terrace, Ashby-de-la-Zouch
In 1819 Sir Walter Scott published Ivanhoe, a novel partly set at Ashby Castle. Three years later the Ivanhoe Baths were opened, promoting the town as a spa (although in fact the water came from a colliery at Moira). The twin attractions of the castle ruins, with their newly acquired literary connection, and the baths made Ashby into a significant Georgian tourist centre. The visitors needed to be accommodated and this terrace on South Street was built for the purpose to a design by Robert Chaplin between 1822 and 1826.
