The train is heading for Loughborough with No. 45305 in charge, tender first. The locomotive is one of Stanier's famous 'Black 5' class and was built in Newcastle in 1936.

Leicester North departure
The 09:45 for Loughborough departs with LMS 'Crab' No. 13065 in charge of a rake of coaches in blood and custard livery with a griddle car. The food looked tasty but with a 30 minute wait it didn't fit in with our plans for the morning. The orange bricks mark the original entrance to Birstall Station. This was a typical Great Central island station accessed from the over bridge. The new station is a single platform accessed on the flat. I have never tried this angle before.

Former access to Leicester North Station
The original station was obviously an island platform accessed by stairs from the bridge through the now infilled entrance marked by red bricks. The entrance structure is of the same style as those at Rothley and Quorn & Woodhouse stations. This is now a preserved line. The road over the bridge is, appropriately enough, Station Road.

Site of Belgrave & Birstall station
Part of the site of Belgrave & Birstall station, on the Great Central Railway's London extension on the northern outskirts of Leicester, is now used by the heritage railway called the Great Central Railway for its southern terminus, Leicester North. The bricked up former entrance to Belgrave & Birstall can be seen on the road bridge to the north of the present station; it led to an island platform, hence the two bridge portals. While much of the present GCR is double track, the section into Leicester North is single, using the former down side.
