Glenfield Tunnel airshaft at Holmwood Court
The Glenfield Tunnel is just over a mile long and was built between 1829–32, at a final cost of £17,326, it formed part of the Leicester & Swannington railway. It was in use for over 130 years until its closure in the 1960s. The redundant tunnel was bought by Leicester City Council for £5, and later underwent £500,000 of strengthening work in 2007-8. The western portal of the tunnel at Stephenson Court in Glenfield has been sealed up. The eastern portal near the Gilroes Cemetery is now buried.

Glenfield Tunnel air shaft
The Glenfield Tunnel was one of the world’s first steam railway tunnels, it is just over one mile long. It was designed by the famous railway engineer George Stephenson and built between 1829–32 under the supervision of his son Robert. This air shaft is hidden in some trees on the corner of New Parks Way and Kemp Road.
