The Glenfield Tunnel is just over a mile long and was built between 1829–32, at a final cost of £17,326, it formed part of the Leicester & Swannington railway. It was in use for over 130 years until its closure in the 1960s. The redundant tunnel was bought by Leicester City Council for £5, and later underwent £500,000 of strengthening work in 2007-8. The western portal of the tunnel at Stephenson Court in Glenfield has been sealed up. The eastern portal near the Gilroes Cemetery is now buried.
