The former Co-operative Boot & Shoe Factory, dating back to 1891, on Knighton Fields Road East. In its heyday, Wheatsheaf Works, owned by the Co-operative Wholesale Society, employed 2,500 workers. It closed in 1985. It is in the process of being converted into 172 townhouses and apartments.

Knighton Fields Road East, this Co-operative factory was built in 1891 and extended in 1900. There is a large part behind this frontage but it is currently off limits. The building (which is grade II listed) is being converted to luxury flats at a cost of £20 million. The courtyard currently has half completed houses inside. The plans look very sympathetic with the main bulk of the external building unchanged. The clock hasn't worked in 10 years I heard. The Co-operative Wholesale Society Boot and Shoe Manufactory of 1891 and known as Wheatsheaf Works. The foreground building has been demolished allowing me to get this view from on top of two industrial size wheely bins. I think it was worth the effort.
