Wheatsheaf Works
Knighton Fields Road East, this Co-operative factory was built in 1891 and extended in 1900. There is a large part behind this frontage but it is currently off limits. The building (which is grade II listed) is being converted to luxury flats at a cost of £20 million. The courtyard currently has half completed houses inside. The plans look very sympathetic with the main bulk of the external building unchanged. The clock hasn't worked in 10 years I heard. Once the largest shoe factory in the world the surrounding terrace housing is mostly student accommodation (I live on this road). Most were built in the 1892 or so, most likely for the workers.

Former shoe factory
The Co-operative Wholesale Society Boot and Shoe Manufactory of 1891 and known as Wheatsheaf Works. The foreground building has been demolished allowing me to get this view from on top of two industrial size wheely bins. I think it was worth the effort.
