Barrowden village pump
Tucked into this alcove alongside Tippings Lane. Set sideways to the road, this makes the handle much easier to use.

Barrowden, Rutland
Between Uppingham and Peterborough, this quintessential English village boasts a substantial village pond complete with ducks. Unfortunately they were rather shy and were hiding beneath the duck house! The pub on the opposite side of the large village green is the Exeter Arms. The houses are built mainly of limestone, typical of the villages in this area.

The Exeter Arms, Barrowden
Every village green needs a pub! This one looks south across the green near the heart of the village.
Although a long way from Devon the pub is named after the Marquess of Exeter, one of the titles of the Cecil family from Burghley House.
David George Brownlow Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter (1905-1981) was a student athlete at Cambridge University in the 1920s, dramatised in the film Chariots of Fire (1981). Lord Burghley, as he was called at that time, won Olympic gold at the 1928 Amsterdam Games for the 400 metres hurdles and was British Olympic captain at the 1932 and 1936 Games.
