Parish church [3]
The church of St Andrew in Norton is Norman but was substantially rebuilt by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1868 in a Gothic Revival style. Much of the medieval church was retained and repaired where necessary, and the transepts, vestry and a short spire were added. Constructed of rubble stone with ashlar dressings and clay tiled roofs with a timber boarded belfry. The church has been declared redundant and it is planned to make the building into a 'community hub'. Listed, grade II*, with details at: https://cadwpublic-api.azurewebsites.net/reports/listedbuilding/FullReport?lang=&id=8952 Norton is a small, rural villages astride the B4355 road some 2 miles north of Presteigne and some 3½ miles south of Knighton. St Andrew's Church in Norton / Eglwys Sant Andreas yn Norton
Richard Haslam's Pevsner guide of 1979 notes that the church was "substantially rebuilt" in 1868 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. That implies reconstruction of the entire fabric but retaining the old plan and foundations, apart from the addition of small transepts to north and south. "Scott reproduced the old work only approximately, e.g. the polygonal ribbed ceiling over the choir. Some old woodwork was kept in the low screen, which has four flat quatrefoil-headed lights ... either side of a wide cambered archway."

Norton bier
The wheeled bier in Image was purchased for £30 in 1926, and was available only for funerals from houses within a strictly defined area within the parish. Charges for its use were levied on a sliding scale according to the rateable value of the bereaved household, ranging from two shillings (10p) to ten shillings (50p) - with a minimum fee of five shillings (25p) for "outsiders of the parish". With the advent of motorised hearses, the old bier has been relegated to use as a tract table, for display of leaflets near the entrance to the church.

A window of 1989 in Image in memory of Judith Griffiths. Possibly representing the conversion of St Paul (the Maltese cross prophesying his later shipwreck?) - but the significance of the West Highland terrier escapes me.
