Path up slag heap
A great hill of waste created by Millom Ironworks (in operation 1860s-1968), now part of a nature reserve - see Image .

Insect House Millom Ironworks Local Nature Reserve
This is the second of two Insect Houses on the Nature Reserve. The first is credited to pupils of Millom School and this one is down to Friends of the MILNR. Both were under the leadership of "the Natterjack man, Bill Shaw" (William Shaw Cumbria Natterjack Conservation Officer).
The insect house is made from many different materials including hay, straw, reeds, pine cones, bricks slate, gravel, sand, drilled logs, bark etc. The objective is to provide a home for as many types of insect as possible, particularly over the winter period.

Slag heap plateau
The sides of this heap are covered with grass and bushes, so it was a big surprise to see the bare white surface. It is waste from the blast furnaces of Millom Ironworks, which closed in 1968. The cleared site is now a nature reserve http://www.english-nature.org.uk/Special/lnr/lnr_details.asp?C=9&N=&ID=1389 .
