Benchmark, King Street
Detail of an Ordnance Survey cut benchmark on the limestone quoin of a shop on the corner of King Street and Lower Brook Street. The benchmark marks a height of 23.804m above sea level (Ordnance Datum Newlyn) last levelled and verified in 1968.

Ulverston Marketplace
The chemist’s shop and the adjacent building, number 9 Market Place are both Grade II Listed, as is the war memorial at the top of Market Street. The war memorial was unveiled in 1921 and is often referred to as Ulverston Market Cross.

King Street, Ulverston
The premises of J. Hewitt, pharmacist and photographic chemist, are prominent in this view of Ulverston town centre. It was a long established local firm but the business passed to J.N. Murray - a Barrow-based pharmacy chain - in 2002. For some reason, they elected to retain the old sign for a few years but it was finally taken down in 2007. Its replacement - with the new business name - was in a similar style. In 2017 the Murray business was sold to the Cohens Group - a national pharmacy chain.

Ulverston Market Place
Viewed from Queen Street looking across to King Street. The war memorial, often referred to as the market cross is to the right at the top of Market Street.

Bench, Market Street, Ulverston
The benches provided in Ulverston town centre all have this interesting design involving a squirrel and what presumably are nuts, though they look a bit like grapes. In front of the Old Drug Warehouse (a branch of Murrays Pharmacies according to the large sign above the door) is a George V pillar box.

Flying Umbrellas on Market Street
The “flying umbrellas” strung across Market Street are part of Ulverston Community Enterprises’ latest exhibition https://www.nwemail.co.uk/news/18627026.hanging-umbrellas-hidden-pianos-colourful-cairns-brighten-ulverston-new-outdoor-exhibition/. The group is running a series of outdoor installations throughout August to bring some enjoyment into the town after the venue was forced to cancel the remainder of its events for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic_in_the_United_Kingdom .
