Rainhill is one of the oldest railway stations in the World, opening in 1830. It has an important place in railway history, as the location of the Rainhill Trials (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainhill_Trials ) where the proposed designs of locomotives for were tested in competition prior to the opening of the World’s first passenger railway, between Liverpool and Manchester. Rainhill railway station still serves the route of the Liverpool to Manchester Line. It is operated by Northern Rail on behalf of Merseytravel and services are branded as Merseyrail. Rainhill Station
Rainhill is nowadays an unremarkable stop on the Liverpool - Manchester line, but it has a special place in railway history. It was here in October 1829 that trials were held which established beyond doubt that the steam locomotive was the future; the trials were famously won by George Stephenson's Rocket.
