Rainhill is one of the oldest railway stations in the World, opening in 1830. It has an important place in railway history, as the location of the Rainhill Trials (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainhill_Trials ) where the proposed designs of locomotives for were tested in competition prior to the opening of the World’s first passenger railway, between Liverpool and Manchester. Rainhill railway station still serves the route of the Liverpool to Manchester Line. It is operated by Northern Rail on behalf of Merseytravel and services are branded as Merseyrail. The present station building was erected during the 1870s. Here, Northern Rail Pacer DMU 142033 waits at the eastbound platform.
