Remains of steam engines - Garston
This pair of inverted vertical compound marine steam engines is in the former Garston Ship Breakers site; now completely abandoned. They are a very incomplete handed pair with no obvious marks to identify them. I think they might be from the former floating crane Birket but have not been able to confirm that yet. The one on the left is lying down but the one on the right is the right way up. they are about 12' tall, 9' long and 6' wide. I suspect they are really beyond salvation. A visit in October 2013 revealed that they were no longer there.

Wreckage at Garston with Stanlow refineries in the distance
A view across the Mersey from the former Garston Ship Breakers site. A visit in 2013 revealed that the junk had been tidied away but the yard was still derelict.

Garston Ship Breakers yard - marine steam engine
One of a pair of inverted vertical compound marine steam engines in the former Garston Ship Breakers site; now completely abandoned. They are a very incomplete handed pair with no obvious marks to identify them. I think they might be from the former floating crane Birket but have not been able to confirm that yet. This One is lying down but the other (barely visible in the undergrowth) is the right way up. They are about 12' tall, 9' long and 6' wide. I suspect they are really beyond salvation. This view shows the top of the high pressure piston valve on the right as the top cover is missing. A visit in October 2013 revealed that they were no longer there.

Garston Ship Breakers
This is the abandoned site of Garston Ship Breakers with a few largely wrecked vessels on the foreshore. The yard extends in front of the red brick gables and contains various items of incomplete and wrecked machinery - including a pair of compound marine steam engines.

Wreckage on the foreshore. Apart from the extensive detritus there is little evidence there was ever an industry here.

Entrance to Speke and Garston Coastal Reserve
Large boulder marking the entrance to the Speke and Garston Coastal Reserve and the start of the Mersey Way footpath from the car park at the end of Blackburne Street. The Speke and Garston Coastal Reserve consists of a stretch of the estuary shore from Garston Docks to Speke Hall. This local nature reserve with panoramic views of the Mersey as well as its meadows and wildlife habitats, interwoven with footpaths and cycle trails, is now a haven of tranquillity which has risen from the rubble of the original Liverpool Airport site.
