Old station building, Forth Place, Burntisland
This elegant building dates from 1847 and was the original station building, when Burntisland was the northern terminus of the world's first roll-on roll-off rail ferry to Granton in Edinburgh. It was replaced by the new station behind the original which was built to connect with the new line to Inverkeithing and the opening of the Forth Bridge in 1890. The old building is now occupied by an art studio and other businesses.

Old Station House, Burntisland (south elevation)
The fine B-listed (LB22783 https://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB22783 ) station house is surplus to modern requirements and now in use as offices. Note the rather forlorn buffer stop of a vanished siding.

Burntisland Railway Station
The railway came to Burntisland in 1847. From then until the opening of the Forth Bridge in 1890, Burntisland was a terminus of national significance. In that period, the Burntisland/Granton ferry was the principal means of crossing the Forth estuary. Passengers transferred from the train to the ferry, and back to the train at the other side. This picture shows the facade of the original 1847 station, access to the 1890 station is through the door on the left. The newer station is behind and to the left of this building.

Burntisland railway station, Fife
Opened in 1847 as a terminus station, the original platforms were just out of view to the left of this image, and were convenient for the ferry connection to and from Edinburgh.
In 1890, the Forth Bridge was opened and the North British Railway realigned the platforms to this location to permit through running of trains to Edinburgh.
