WWII Sea Mine
WWII Sea Mine. The Shore, Aberdour. Enjoying charitable status in peacetime. A collection tin for "The Shipwrecked Fishermen & Mariners Royal Benevolent Society". How on earth the pointy parts are allowed in this day and age, without protection and at head height to a toddler is beyond me. Av' someone's eye out that. I would have thought the Council would have fitted a guard or removed the spikes. It gives me a chill every time I walk past it. An accident waiting to happen. I have listed this under the category of "mine" though I fear it will look out of place if one does a search for all the mines in the area! This mine would have been swept up after the war. During the strikes of the 70's and 80's the local miners wept as collyer..colliyr...collier... er, pit after pit closed down.

The Prospect from Aberdour
On the far left is Hawkcraig Point where the paddle steamers used to land their passengers in Victorian times. They called this beach The Jewel of the Fife Riviera. The view from here looks across the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh.

Obelisk, Aberdour
Earl of Morton's Obelisk. Aberdour, Fife. Standing nearly 40 feet high thinks it was built just to show off to his pals in Edinburgh. Strangely there are no markings on any part of the structure. Further info....The Obelisk is situated on top of Cuttlehill and marks the territory of one of the Earls of Morton. I think it was put up in the 19th century. Allegedly it was erected so that the Earl could show all his pals in Edinburgh where his land was and has no other significant reason for being there, or so I'm told. The title Earl of Morton was created in the Peerage of Scotland in 1458 for James Douglas. Along with it, the title Lord Aberdour was granted. This latter title is the courtesy title for the eldest son and heir to the Earl of Morton... My thanks to Rab Coates for his assistance with some of the historical points here.

The Harbour at Aberdour
View of the harbour towards Hawkcraig. Pic taken from the Fife Coastal Path which skirts around the harbour and along the hill and over the cliffs at Hawkcraig. Alternative route up the "Donkey Brae". When the sun is shining it's just the ticket for working off that "Full English" on a Sunday morning.
