Tounigar, 22 Shore Street, Kirkwall
Category B listed house in the oldest part of Kirkwall. The plaque on the wall declares it as 16th century but the listing as 18th century. The history of the house, as far as ownership is concerned, can be traced back into the sixteenth century. Possibly it may have been the first Tolbooth of the burgh or Town Hall, the quarters of the Town Guard, and the prison. It seems BP who own the building that lies within their fuel depot attempted to demolish it in 2007 but this was blocked.

Scott Was Here
And he was too - in 1814 Sir Walter Scott, dined here while on a trip to Orkney & Shetland with the Commissioners of the Northern Lighthouses - he kept a detailed diary for the 6 week voyage and the result was The Pirate http://www.walterscott.lib.ed.ac.uk/works/novels/pirate.html Sadly no longer an Inn but an Indian Restaurant.

Cruise liner in town
The giant cruise liner, the Splendida, owned and operated by MSC cruises, is currently moored at Hatston Pier just outside Kirkwall. With over 3000 passengers on board, compared with a total population on Orkney Mainland of only about 18,000, the facilities and attractions of Kirkwall and Skara Brae tend to be somewhat overwhelmed by such visits. "Crocodiles" of passengers may be seen on such occasions being marshalled through the town. But no doubt good for the economy.
