The giant cruise liner, the Splendida, owned and operated by MSC cruises, is currently moored at Hatston Pier just outside Kirkwall. With over 3000 passengers on board, compared with a total population on Orkney Mainland of only about 18,000, the facilities and attractions of Kirkwall and Skara Brae tend to be somewhat overwhelmed by such visits. "Crocodiles" of passengers may be seen on such occasions being marshalled through the town. But no doubt good for the economy.
