The mill, which stands by the River Thurso, is also known as Halkirk Mill. It is described in the OS Name Book of 1871-1873 as, "a very good corn mill with all the modern improvements in the machinery for making meal, flour etc". The ruins of a lime kiln can be seen between the mill and the right edge of the photo.
