This steel-framed building overlooking Kingston bus station (foreground) is the former Hawker Aircraft Experimental Shop, built in 1933, and associated with the development of the Hurricane. View from the platform of Kingston station
Kingston station opened on 1 July 1863 as Kingston Town (or Kingston New), to distinguish it from the earlier Kingston station (which subsequently became Surbiton) on the South West Main Line. It was then the terminus of the London & South Western Railway branch line from Twickenham. In 1869, the line was prolonged to connect to the South West Main Line via Norbiton. The Southern Railway rebuilt the station in 1935.
