View from the platform of Kingston station
Kingston station opened on 1 July 1863 as Kingston Town (or Kingston New), to distinguish it from the earlier Kingston station (which subsequently became Surbiton) on the South West Main Line. It was then the terminus of the London & South Western Railway branch line from Twickenham. In 1869, the line was prolonged to connect to the South West Main Line via Norbiton. The Southern Railway rebuilt the station in 1935.

The station buildings date from the 1930s, but recent modifications have moved the entrance away from the corner position, which is now occupied by a coffee shop.
