The Running Horse (1), 38 Bridge Street
It is claimed that this pub dates back as far as 1403, and was built on land belonging to the church. It is also said that at one time it was known as Rummings House, because of an association with an Eleynor Rumminge, who was apparently a notorious figure in the 16th century. Not all authorities accept that there was any direct connection between her and this pub, nor that the present building is quite as old as claimed. Nevertheless it is certainly a very old pub, and very popular today, with food available, a large garden and many other facilities. This is a Shepherd Neame pub. The Running Horse (3) - portrait of Elynor Rummyn, 38 Bridge Street
This portrait of Elynor Rummyn, appears on one of the pub's external walls. It is not clear whether she was a real person, but the 16th century poet, John Skelton, wrote a robust poem about her. She was depicted as a woman who brewed her own ale, in her own beerhouse, and this ale included some strange ingredients which she felt would encourage consumption! The Running Horse believe they are the pub she once ran. Not everyone is sure of this, but it makes an amusing tale, at the very least. It should be said that spelling was not standardised in those far-off days, not even for personal names. So there are several different spellings for Elynor's name. Even the pub can't agree on which is correct. They spell it one way on this portrait, and a different way on their website!
