It is claimed that this pub dates back as far as 1403, and was built on land belonging to the church. It is also said that at one time it was known as Rummings House, because of an association with an Eleynor Rumminge, who was apparently a notorious figure in the 16th century. Not all authorities accept that there was any direct connection between her and this pub, nor that the present building is quite as old as claimed. Nevertheless it is certainly a very old pub, and very popular today, with food available, a large garden and many other facilities. This is a Shepherd Neame pub.
