Millport?s Hidden Cannon
A German 155mm field gun or howitzer, which was manufactured in the Krupps factory near Munich. There had been a number of theories about where the gun had come from, before it was discovered that it was part of a pair of German Howitzers presented to Millport as a trophy after the First World War in recognition of the sacrifices of the islanders. Forty two men were lost from Millport’s population. The islanders had no desire to be confronted with these relics of death and destruction on a daily basis and this one was buried out of sight below the seawall. The fate of the other one is uncertain, but it may also be buried.

Brittle Fractures
This is an even closer view of Image The mudstone is soft and plastic and readily moves to accommodate folding, but the thin sheets of limestone are harder and brittle, and can break when folded, with veins of recrystallised minerals filling in any cracks.

This is a closer look at Image The brown material is the mud, and the pale layers that pick out the folds are thin limestones. See also Image

Folded Mudstone
These mudstones contain thin layers of harder material which stand out proud against the mudstone, making it easy to see that the mudstones have been folded into a wavy pattern. See Image] for a detailed view.
