A German 155mm field gun or howitzer, which was manufactured in the Krupps factory near Munich. There had been a number of theories about where the gun had come from, before it was discovered that it was part of a pair of German Howitzers presented to Millport as a trophy after the First World War in recognition of the sacrifices of the islanders. Forty two men were lost from Millport’s population. The islanders had no desire to be confronted with these relics of death and destruction on a daily basis and this one was buried out of sight below the seawall. The fate of the other one is uncertain, but it may also be buried.
